Rental Car Rally: LA to Vegas

The Rental Car Rally was RIDICULOUS!  There are a million and one outrageous stories and details about this RCR, but in the interest of this being a travel blog, I'll keep the focus on our interesting adventure through the desert of southern California.

The rally started at the Toyota Speedway in Irwindale around 9pm.  There were about 50 cars/teams competing in the rally and we all got acquainted at the pre-party!

Meeting lots of new friends in crazy costumes!

Around 11:45pm it was time to hit the road, but first we got to drive around the NSCAR Speedway!

Driving on the speedway!

We had 10 checkpoints to hit on our way to Vegas.

Checkpoint 1: Old LA Zoo
Our first stop was at the Old LA Zoo.  A lot of teams reached the first checkpoint around the same time and Zoo security was not to thrilled about our arrival.  It didn't help that people were trying to jump fences.  We took our required checkpoint photo and RAN back to the car for a quick getaway.  (And now that I am looking up the Old LA Zoo, I'm not sure we were at the right place for this checkpoint...oops).

Checkpoint 2: Snow Crest Ski Resort
The second stop was at Snow Crest Ski Resort, which is on Waterman Mountain in South Antelope Valley/Angeles National Forest.  It was a long and very curvy ride to the top of the mountain, where we found an abandoned ski resort that was closed after five teenagers died in a car crash on their way home from a rave.  This was another very brief stop since there was a creepy rape van parked near the ski lift and other teams throwing eggs in our direction.

Checkpoint 3: Rock Faces in Victorville
Down the mountain we went on our way to Victorville.  Our task was to find rock faces (click the link to see what we were supposed to be looking for), based on some longitude and latitude coordinates.  The rock faces are faces carved into the granite rocks.  This proved to be the biggest challenge.  We took a lot of wrong turns and went down some random dirt roads on the hunt for rock faces.  We eventually ended up along a dirt road with a lot of parked rally cars and got out to see if anyone had found the rock faces.  No one could find the rock faces and everyone was getting frustrated.  Eventually we gave up and hit the road for our next checkpoint.  Maybe it would have been easier in the daylight.

Pretending to be Rock Faces

Checkpoint 4: Desert Christ Park, Yucca Valley
Our next stop was Yucca Valley, which was one of the longest drives between checkpoints. The sun started coming up as we were driving. We found our way to Desert Christ Park. At the park there were a lot of large Jesus statues. It was nice to get out of the car and breathe some fresh air since we were all starting to get a bit antsy in the car. The wee hours of the morning were the most difficult to stay awake through.

Checkpoint 5: Noah Purifoy Outdoor Desert Art Museum
Checkpoint 5 was my favorite!  We went to an open air museum full of crazy works of art, mostly made of everyday objects.  I walked around for quite awhile checking out all of the sculptures and creations.  This stop was in Joshua Tree which I always thought would be cool to visit.  I particularly enjoyed this stop because it was something really interesting that I would probably never have seen otherwise.

Welcome to the Crazy Art Museum

Checkpoint 6: Chloride Fields, Amboy
Amboy is a nearly abandoned town with the exception of Calcium Chloride fields.  There are long channels of chloride along the side of National Trails Highway.  After seeing more than my fair share of desert scenery, it was interesting to see the stark white chloride channels, some of which were filled with water.  It was a very unqiue sight to see!

Checkpoint 7: Kelso, CA
Kelso is a ghost town and former railroad depot in the Mojave National Reserve.  A lot of ralliers were at this stop and it was fun to mingle for a bit and take some silly pictures in the decaying buildings.

Checkpoint 8: Baker, CA
Baker was the first sight of real civilization we had seen in a long, long time.  We stopped at Big Boy for some lunch and to complete our eighth checkpoint task, to eat a fudge cake.  We also got to see the world's tallest thermometer.  Our car got sabotaged by another team while we were inside eating.  Luckily we found a very nice mechanic who helped us wash the car off.  If you ever breakdown near Baker, please visit Dan the mechanic!

Checkpoint 9: Hot Springs, Tecopa, CA
Vegas was getting closer and closer, but we still had 2 checkpoints to hit.  Next up was the hot springs in Topeca.  Unfortunately they were closed when we got there.  We tried driving down a few roads to find them, but no luck, so we just had to take our picture by the sign.

Checkpoint 10: Chicken Ranch and Bar, Pahrump, NV
The final checkpoint was in Pahrump, NV.  We heard that the restaurant was closed for renovations and in our eagerness to get to Vegas, we skipped this checkpoint.  We later found out that this checkpoint was also home to a brothel and I was disappointed we didn't stop.  Can't say I've ever seen a brothel before.  Some of the male teams got some pretty good pictures with the ladies.

Checkpoint 10b: Rumors Hotel, Las Vegas, NV
Our final stop was at Rumors Hotel in Vegas!  Here we checked in with the RCR organizers to report our odometer reading.  We celebrated our arrival with a quick drink at Rumors before heading to our hotel, the Monte Carlo.

Our journey took us a grand total of 16.5 hours!  We arrived in Vegas around 4:15pm on Saturday after staying awake all night.  It was an amazing journey filled with interesting sights, lots of laughs, and fun times with great people.

Upcoming Awesomeness: Rental Car Rally

My next adventure is on the horizon!  This coming weekend, I will be participating in a Rental Car Rally!

What is a Rental Car Rally you ask?  I'll let the good people of RCR explain:

Rental Car Rally is Halloween on Wheels

RCR is an overnight, backroads-mostly driving competition between crazily-festooned teams competing for cash prizes and a golden gas pump. There are usually between 25 and 60 teams per event. Except this one time there were 73 teams and some dudes dressed as clowns crashed their minivan on a bridge in Canada. So. Anyway. It's ballerhouse tits-out crazytown.

You Win by Hitting the Checkpoints and Looking Awesome

RCR isn't technically a race. The team with the lowest odometer score and best costumes wins. Each team must hit several checkpoints along the route, including sites like abandoned airfields, giant decommissioned howitzers, airplane graveyards, and other absurdly awesome locations.

Expect Good Times and Possible Incarceration

Trucks, covered in dog fur! Grown men, dressed like Rambo! Grown women, dressed like trailer trash! Border patrol agents who don't like pot cookies, sheriffs who'll accuse you of pedophilia, casino owners unamused by costumed gamblers, and bar managers who will kindly referee an impromptu Greco-Roman wrestling match. True stories. When you rally with RCR, you meet some amazing people who are bored with conventional entertainment and weary of respecting the Interstate Highway System.

More Here: http://www.rentalcarrally.com/

I'll be participating with my friend Jen that I know from grad school, and some of her friends from back home (LA).  Our Rental Car Rally will be from LA to Vegas!  There are six crazy people on our team and we will be known as "80s Cartoon Mash-Up."  Here's who will be rockin out in our minivan:

Rainbow Brite (me)
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle (Raphael)
Care Bear
She-Ra
Cheetara
Jem

We'll depart LA late Friday night (11pm I think), attempt to hit all the check points on our overnight adventure, and hopefully find ourselves in Vegas on Saturday morning.  With the help of some energy drinks, I'm sure, we'll have to gear up for two nights in Vegas, before heading home on Monday for some much needed sleep!

More to come on the awesomeness of this adventure, but in the meantime, check out all the crazy teams we will be competing against, only to later party with...

Arizona & The Natty

The Ducks made it to the BCS National Championship!  Of course I had to make a trip to Arizona for the game.  I had a couple other good reasons for my trip as well though:

1) I've never been to Arizona!  My new year's resolution was to visit some place sthat I have never been before.  Arizona seemed like just as good a place as any.

2) I have some family friends, The Gish's, who live out there that I hadn't seen in forever.  What a great excuse to visit!

I bought my plane ticket with little hope that I would actually have a ticket to the game.  They were going for a minimum of $1500 on Stubhub.  A bunch of friends were going down to tailgate without game tickets, so I wasn't too worried.  In the end, I got a ticket about a week before the game for face value. Yay for connections!  More on the game later.

Friday, January 7, 2011
I decided to make a nice long weekend out of my trip.  I arrived in Phoenix at 4pm on Friday and Justin picked me up at the airport.  I got a good taste of the Arizona landscape as we drove out to his place in Gilbert.

That night we decided to try out 5 Guys Burgers.  Its supposed to be like the In 'n Out Burger of the east coast.  I didn't realize this going in, so I was expecting something a little different.  Overall, it was pretty good, but not the most amazing burger ever.  There fries were definitely way better than In 'n Out's!

Next stop was Kona Grill for some drinks.  Kona is in an outdoor mall area called Santan Village right near his house.  We had some yummy drinks and ordered dessert.  Dessert was pretty much the end of us!  We were soooo full and decided it was time to go back to his place to watch a movie (Dinner with Schmucks) and chill out.

Saturday, January 8, 2011
We slept in a bit and then headed to Joe's Farm Grill, which was featured on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives.  The restaurant uses all local ingredients, many of which come from their own farm which is right behind the restaurant.  I had a Pesto Chicken Sandwich and it was pretty tasty!

On our way out of the Joe's Farm Grill, we decided to drive through a community of homes called Agritopia.  The neighborhood was like a flashback to the 1950s.  There were tons of kids playing in the streets and everyone seemed to know each other.  The houses were really cute too!  Later that day we looked up the area to see if any houses were for sale.  The housing prices were unbelievable to me (in a "Holy crap! That's cheap!" kind of a way)!  You can buy a house that is over 5,000 square feet for under $400,000.  Many of the smaller houses (but still over 1500 sq. ft.) were under $200,000.

Next up, Justin and I thought we would duke it out on the mini golf course.  Justin and I have a long history of playing mini golf together in Twain Harte, where our families originally met.  Nothing compares to the Twain Harte Mini Golf place and their real metal putters, but we ventured to a Mini Golf place in Mesa.  We had a great time and of course Justin kicked my ass, per usual.  I'm really not that bad, he's just incredibly good at golf in general.  I had one really amazing shot where I hit the ball up a ramp that was suppose to land in a bullseye, but instead took off like a rocket over the fence and into a lazy river at the adjoining water park.  I was pretty impressed with myself.

That night we met up with Justin's parents at Brio an Italian restaurant in Santan Village.  I hadn't seen them in 10 years or so, which is just way too long.  Our 45-65 minute wait for a table turned into a 2 hour wait, but we had a great time catching up and reminiscing about old times in Twain Harte.

The Oregon Pep Rally was happening out in Scottsdale at 5pm. We thought we would make a day of it and explore Scottsdale during the day and then head to the rally. We got off to a late start, so I didn't see too much of the city. Old Town was pretty cool...it looked like an old western town. The streets were lined with tons of nick-nack shops and art galleries. We checked out a couple before going to find the rally.

We got to the rally site and I was shocked at how many people were waiting in line to get inside.  We made our way in and I was hoping to find all my friends that were in town for the game.  Unfortunately, but not shockingly, my phone had no service.  Thanks AT&T.  Typical.  Eventually I tracked them down and we enjoyed catching up and getting pumped at the rally!

Afterwards, it was time to check out one of the many casinos in Arizona.  Justin took us to one of the bigger casinos not too far from Scottsdale called Casino Arizona.  It was my first trip to an Indian casino.  We did a bit of gambling...roulette for both of us, then he played some blackjack.  It almost felt like Vegas, but definitely not quite as cool.

Monday, January 11, 2011: Game Day
Finally Monday had arrived and it was time to go cheer on my Ducks at the BSC National Championship game. I met up with Bink, Ben, Luke, and Lisa at their hotel. After a couple stops and meeting up with Kristin and Matt, we headed out to Glendale. The game was being played at the Arizona Cardinals stadium. In addition to the big game, I was excited to check out a new stadium. Before this game, I had never been to an indoor football or baseball stadium.

We parked, chugged a beer, then decided to start wandering around. We found the Westgate City Center, which is an outdoor mall with tons of restaurants and bars. Of course it was packed, but it seemed pretty cool and like a fun place to pre-party (and watch the game for the ticketless). After finding some quick food, it was time to tailgate hop.

We all started getting antsy and anxious about the game and it was time to head into the stadium. Our standing room only tickets ended up being really awesome. We had an assigned section and seat number, which happened to be on the 200 Club Level of the stadium. What a pleasant surprise! Despite the tough loss to Auburn University (from Alabama), we had a great time at the game!

Tickets! All different!

We all met back up afterwards for a somber drive back to Mesa/Gilbert. It was a sad day for Duck fans, but overall a great season. I love my Ducks and always will!

Tuesday, January 12, 2011
My last day in Arizona was pretty relaxing. We just hung out at Justin's house before packing up and heading out to his parents house in Mesa. We visited with them for a while and looked at old Twain Harte photos. Hopefully I will be seeing them again this summer for a Twain Harte reunion.

I took Justin out to dinner at Red, White, and Brew as a thank you for letting me stay with him and entertaining me all weekend. After dinner we headed to the airport so I could get home.

Overall it was a really great weekend! I had so much fun seeing the Gish's again and watching my Ducks play in the National Championship!

Gorgeous AZ Sunset

I hope to make it back to Arizona at some point to see the Grand Canyon and go to Spring Training!

Whidbey Island, WA

This post is WAY overdue, but better late than never...

The first weekend of August I traveled to Whidbey Island, just outside of Seattle to celebrate the marriage of Kelly and Pablo.  It turned into a fun weekend getaway and a bit of a college reunion.

Traveling to Whidbey was quite the process (but well worth it).  First I flew from SFO to SEA.  Lisa and Jeremiah were kind enough to pick me up at the airport, then we drove to the ferry terminal.  Usually on a Friday afternoon there would be a long wait for the ferry, but we somehow lucked out and only had to wait about 20 minutes.  It was the kind of ferry where you drive your car onto it which was new and fun for me.
Driving onto the Ferry

View- Observation Deck

The ferry ride was only 20 minutes, but they let you get out of your car and go up to the observation deck.

Once we got to Whidbey we had  about a 30 minute drive from the ferry terminal in Clinton to Coopeville, where we were staying.  A group of us rented a vacation home for the weekend, which worked out great.  We all don't get to spend a lot of time together, so it was fun to all be staying at the same house, as opposed to separate hotel rooms.

Our Vacation House
The first night proved that we are all getting a little over...we stayed in and played catch phrase.  It was great to catch up with everyone!

College Crew
On Saturday we decided to check out the town of Coupeville.  Its very quaint with little shops and pretty views.  We started with breakfast at the Knead and Feed in town.  I had the most amazing cinnamon swirl french toast.  I also picked up one of their famous homemade cinnamon rolls for the next morning.

After a big breakfast we decided to brave the rain and take a look around town.  We checked out the shops on the main drag, then walked out a long pier to look at the pretty view.

Looking back at Coopeville
That afternoon we got ready for the wedding and drove to Greenbank, where Kelly's family has a vacation house.  They were hosting a wedding reception at their gorgeous house to celebrate their wedding which happened a few months prior in Spain.  It rained for most of the evening, but we made the best of it and still had a great time.  We even got a chance to show the Spainards how American college kids party...keg stands and all.

Sunday we had to make the long journey back and unfortunately were not as lucky in the ferry line.  We probably waited about an hour and a half to get on the ferry, but once we did, it was smooth sailing.

Hopefully Kelly will invite us back again someday ;)

Thailand Adventures from 2005

Back in 2005, I took a trip to Thailand with my friend Grace.  I kept a blog while I was there, but on another site.  I decided it was time to move it on over to this one so that everything could be in one spot.  Very weird to look back and hear what I had to say about my experience there...

Thailand Adventures Part 1 (written Sunday, November 27, 2005)

Arrival
Our trip began after a delicious turkey dinner when we got the airport at about 10pm Thanksgiving night. Good 'ole dad pulled some strings so we got to chill in the Dynasty Lounge (VIP) while we waited for our flight. 13.5 hours later we arrived in Taipei. I don't recommend spending more than 5 minutes in that airport, but we survived the 3 hour layover before another 3.5 hours to Bangkok. We checked into a cute little hotel and the realization of how cheap Thailand is kicked in...350baht for one night (about $8.50). We even went for the gold and opted to have hot water in our room. The hotel is in a touristy area that is lined with stores, restaurants, and bars.
Bangkok
We start exploring Bangkok by attempting to walk to the Grand Palace. We didn't get too far when we were stopped by the most friendliest person ever #1. He told us about some wats (temples) that are only open once a month and we happened to arrive on one of those days. He drew us the cutest little map with all the stops we had to make, hailed us a tuk-tuk driver, and negotiated a price for us, 60Baht to go to all the places and have him wait while we looked around ($1.50). We saw a lot of really big Buddahs. We feel quite lucky that the really nice man hooked us up with what to check out. The tuk-tuk driver is the nicest person ever #2. Oh and by the way, a tuk-tuk is a little motorized tricycle looking thing with a seating area in the back with a canopy thing. You might have to wait to see the pics to understand. Just know that they are awesome.
The Next Day (today)
We woke up at the crack of dawn...gotta love jet lag. We ate some breakfast and then attempted to head to the floating market. We got sent to the wrong one which was a bit of a disappointment, but what can you do. Next we headed over to the weekend market which was insane. It was huge and you could buy anything you could think of there from animals, to silk, to underware, to household decorations. We made some good cute jewelry purchases and some elephant stuff...I can't give away too much because it might be your souvenier gift. We got lunch for a whopping $3.50 for the two of us.
After a lot of walking around the market we head back to the hotel. When we get back, I turn to Grace and say "wanna go get foot massages?" Yeah, you can say that around here. We got a 1/2 hour one for $3.
Next we decided to check out the Grand Palace and Wat Po. These were failed missions because they were both closed, but we did run into the friendliest person ever #3 and #4. #3 drew us a map of some things he thought we should see. The people here are obsessed with drawing us maps. #4 told us there was a Buddah that was only open once and month and that we needed to see it. Like #1, he hailed us a tuk-tuk and negotiated a fair rate to take us there. Now we are back from our adventures and ready to find some noodles for dinner.
Vog Lee
The only thing people are obsessed with more than drawing maps is Vog Lee. This is a factory where all the Armani suits are made. I have heard more about this place than I ever want to. For one week a year it is open to the public. We also happened to arrive just in time for this week. Talk about timing...first the temples and now Vog Lee. It is a pretty good deal because if you buy a suit they measure you and you get a lifetime membership. With the membership you can call and order a suit anytime you want. We didn't get a suit, which we may regret down the road, but we don't have much need for one right now. I may not hear the end of it from the Thais either.
Tomorrow
Tomorrow we are off to Chang Mai...look for another blog soon...

Adventures in Thailand Part Deux (written Friday, December 2, 2005)

Greetings from Thailand. I have had a very exciting and exhausting past few days, but now I am sitting at an internet cafe a block away from the beach. It has been quite hard adjusting from "must see everything" mode to "its ok to do nothing" mode, but I am sure I will be on track in no time. Here is an upadate on the Chaing Mai portion of my trip...
Arrival
We get into Chaing Mai and go to our little guest house. (Nou- we stayed at Baan Kaew and absolutely loved it..Thanks). We took a stroll to see the "old city" that was once walled in. We got a little wat-ed out so decided to grab some dinner. We picked this one place because it said it served Stronbow and I freaked out. They didn't have Strongbow anymore, but they did have Blackthorn Cider. Who ever would have guessed that half way across the world I would find some Blackthorn. Chaing Mai has an awesome night market so we walked around and bought way too much.
Trecking
We left at about 9am on Tuesday morning for our trecking adventure. There we 12 people in our group who were all awesome. 2 german girls, 3 americans, 2 belgians (I was excited), 1 Aussie, 2 English ladies, and then 3 guides. Our guides were awesome and really funny.
We started by stopping at a village and then continuing on to a place for lunch. We kept driving and came to a hill tribe village. We started walking in the early afternoon and hiking along a river for quite a ways. We took on break and then kept going until we came to the hill tribe village where we stayed the night. It was crazy to see how people live there. The houses are all made of bamboo with leaves for roofs and stilted above the ground. They all wanted to sell us bracelets they made. We all ate dinner and then sat around the camp fire drinking some Chang beer and singing to the guitar. We left on mat in one of the houses which was a pretty crazy experience.
The next day was quite strenuous and I thought at times I was going to die. I guess I need to get in better shape. The beginning of the day wasn't too bad as we hiked for about 45 mins before we rode on the elephants, which was awesome. There was even a baby elephant with us (which no one rode...except for the elephant guide who kept trying to hop on his back, but he wasn't having it). Afeter that we started hiking up and down some really steep hills. I wouldn't have minded the steep hills so much if there was something to see at the top, but it seemed we always went all the way up just to go all the way back down. I was hanging in there, but at one point in the middle of the hill, I stopped and said "I just stopped having fun." There was no other choice but to keep going though. We stopped at a waterfall and had some lunch and the rest of the hike from there was much easier. In the end we went bamboo rafting which was quite fun and relaxing. A nice hot shower was definitely in order when we got back.
Overall, the trip has by far been the highlight of my time in Thailand.
Massages
Thai massages are awesome and we have gotten one nearly everyday...you really can't beat the price at about $3.50 for an hour long massage. It was much needed after trecking and I am still so sore.
One Last Day...Wats and Cooking
We ended up staying in Chaing Mai one extra day because the weather down here in the islands in rainy. Yesterday we went to see a hug temple up on the mountain that looked down on the city. While we were there we got a little too excited in one of the Jade jewelry stores...oops.
We heard from a few people along the way that they had been to cooking class. We decided it sounded like a lot of fun and signed up for a course. We learned to make soup, curry chicken, pad thai, banna spring rolls, and stir fry. It was a lot of fun and maybe some day I will try to make some of it again. It was surprisingly easier than it looks. Our teacher was hilarious too.
Unexpected Tour
We went out last night and ran into the English ladies that were on our treck. One of them stayed behind when her friends went home so we decided to ask her to join us. We watched some fake Thai boxing and a little show of women parading around. She really wanted to get wasted and kept buying us double vodkas and lemonade (aka sprite, around here). We are ready to head home and I offer to walk Anita to her hotel because I didn't want to leave to to walk home alone. Little did we know what an adventure this would turn into. We come to find out that she thought she knew how to get to her hotel but really had no idea after we walked around for a good long while while "everything looked familiar and she knew exactly where we were." This wouldn't have turned into such a problem if she would have known the name of her hotel. We got in a tuk tuk and drove to every hotel that started with Chaing Mai...which happened to be a lot of places considering it was the name of the city we were in. Finally one of her friends happened to call and gave her the name of the hotel. Hours later we got back to our hotel. Wow.
Change of Plans...Phuket
So all along we had plans to go to Ko Samui at the end of our trip...The weather has been horrible there...rain and flooding so we ended up catching a flight to Phuket. This is a much more touristy area...I kinda feel like I am in Mexico...should make for some good partying though. We are planning on checking out some of the other islands which I know will be beauiful.
Cultural Note
It has been very interesting and somewhat troubling to see the difference in the way men and women are treated. Women are lined up on the street sitting in chair waiting for a passerby. At the bars all the waitress swarm to any guy that walks by. Today we had to get off our shuttle bus at a tour place and show our ticket. We were about third in line and next to be helped. All the women workers helped all the men behind us in line first and then three of them were helping one man while we stood there waiting. It is a little frustrating to see coming from a different way of life. That is my little rant for the trip.
Ok...enough of my rambling. I promise the next blog will be much more interesting with some funny stories. Miss you all!!! HUGS!!!

Adventures in Thailand Chapter 3 (written Wednesday, December 7, 2005)

Ummm...so I just spent a really long time typing a blog anf then it disappeared :( So Sad. I will try to recreate it.

Greeting from my couch, yes, thats right, I am home. I survied two weeks in Thailand and I had an incredible time. Here is an update on the third leg of my trip and the conclusion and pictures will soon follow...
Phuket
After Chaing Mai, we headed down to Phuket, one of the islands in the south of Thailand. We decided to stay in Patong one of the more touristy beaches on the island. We were thinking it would be great for a little nightlife. It ended up not being as tropical as we had hoped for and the nightlife was out of control...if you are an old white man looking for some action from one of the Thai girls. Don't get me wrong, we made the most of our time there and had an awesome time.
We planned to go out our first night there after a short little nap. We even left the lights on to be sure we didn't sleep too long. Oops, somehow we slept too long and never made it out, except to book our tour for the next day.

Island Hopping
We signed up for a island hopping tour of Krabi. We were hoping for a fun group like we had when we were trecking. We ened up with a group of Russian (?) couples, three Italian guys, and two Thai (?) ladies. Everyone pretty much stuck to themselves, but we had a very nice and relaxing day.

First we went to Hong Island where we saw a beautiful lagoon. It is filled with water when the tide is high and dry when the tide goes down. Next we went to the other side of the island where we did some snorkeling and laid on the beach for a while.

Next stop...Reilay Beach. This was a beautiful beach with some awesome resorts and really good eye candy on the beach. We ate lunch here and then walked to the other side of the island. We saw some cool caves as we walked across. We got to see monkeys when we got to the other side and I took a few too many pictures.

Next we went to Chicken Island (the rocks look like a giant chicken). We snorkeled here and got attacked by all the fishies that wanted our bread. After snorkeling for a while we headed over to Miracle Beach. This is a beach that had a srtip of sand that connects three islands when the tide is low. When we got there it was going down and you could see people trying to walk across bu they could barely touch the bottom. By the time we left there, you could walk across only getting knee deep.

We headed back on the speed boat and decided to grab some dinner from a place right on the beach where we watched the sun set as we ate. It was sooo beautiful. Finally a taste of paradise without having to leave Patong. Oh and dinner was $5 each for a three course meal.

Tailor
You can't go anywhere in Thailand without seeing tailor shops lining the streets. We never considered going in one until after we talked to our friends from the treck and they told us how much stuff they ordred. We walked into a tailor shop on our way back from dinner and came out ordering a suit and two dresses each. We got to look through books to choose the styles, pick out the material, and then had more measurements than I knew existed. A few fittings later, I have some custom made clothes. Pretty awesome.

Irish Pubs Everywhere I Go
After passing out early the night before, we are ready to head out to the bars for the night. We end up starting off at an Irish pub where a live band was playing awesome covers and the blackthorn was flowing. Somehow we got really wasted quite quickly. We never ended up leaving the pub as it seemed like the best haven from the old white men with Thai girls that were running around everywhere. It is comforting to know that when you go to an Irish pub people are really there just to drink. Equally as comforting, it is great to know that no matter what country you are in, you can find some drunk munchies food. We got a couple of pizzas and went to bed.

Fun Games
The next day we bummed around on the beach. After our first of a few fittings we decided to head over to Kata (another beach on Phuket) where our friends from trecking were staying. We weren't sure if we would be able to find them because we only had their hotel info, but just as we were about to give up, we spotted the hotel bar and knew we would find them there. We had dinner and drinks at their resort which made us regret not spurging and staying at a resort while we were there. We had to head back to Patong for another fitting and they decided to come with us for some more drinks.

We started playing an awesome game as we sat at a bar facing the street. We would have to spot couples and then the others would give a percentage rating of if they paid for the girl or not. For example "70-30" would mean that there was a 70 chance he paid for it and a 30 hance they really liked each other. Most of the ratings fell into the 95-5 or 100-0 rating. It made the disgusting population of old white men seem a little more humourous. After that game got a little repetitive we started the discussion of wondering how much these girls charge and if it depends on the man. I am still curious to know if really old men cost more because that is more gross or if they are cheaper with the hope that they will pass out before anything happens. The question remains unanswered.

Although I was generally disgusted by all the old white men parading around with young Thai girls, it was slightly interesting. I noticed that the men would basically rent-a-girlfriend. I am used to the idea of hourly rates at the local motel when it comes to prostitution, but it was quite different than that. I would see the men walking with the girls down the beach holding hands, eating meals together, drinking together. It was quite odd and unexpected.

Last Day in Phuket and Last Day in Bangkok
We spent our last day in Phuket soaking up some last minute rays with our trecking friends. We picked up our clothes from the tailor and headed to the airport to get back to bangkok. We had our first bad experience when our cab driver screwed us over in bangkok trying to get to our hotel. He told us it would be 300 baht, which is about normal. When we got there and handed him the money he immediately started yelling at us saying that he told us 600 baht, which is a ridiculous amount. He was being kinda scarey so we just gave him the money for a lack of better options. We stayed at our same hotel as we did the first few nights and it was nice to be back some place familiar. We spent our last day there doing some last minute shopping and getting one last massage.

Home
I made it home in one piece and look back on my trip with only good memories. Thailand is awesome and I look forward to going back one day. I knew that I had an awesome time when I got home and my parents asked me the best and worst parts of the trip. Both parts of the question were tough. There were so many best parts and no worst parts. I ended up saying that the best part was trecking and the worst part was the mean cab driver. When that is the best you can come up with for the worst part, you have to know it was a good trip.

I am already itching to plan another trip and I haven't even been home 24 hours. Every place is going to seem so expensive compared to Thailand, but I am sure I will come up with something good. You better start saving money so I can have a travel buddy.

Rose Bowl Weekend

On Wednesday morning I loaded up the car and departed for Pasadena...well actually Sylmar.  The trip took about six hours.  I-5 was moving, but still a lot of cars on the road.  I would get really excited every time I saw a Duck car (apparently I am easily amused when driving alone).  Good thing I discovered the ipod hook up in my car a while back, so that helped to entertain me on the way down.

I arrived in Sylmar around 4pm and was greeted by my cousin Dan, his wife Bego, and their two kids Kevin (7) and Isaac (3).  I hung out with them most of the weekend, which was a lot of fun for me since I don't get to see them too often.  Still fighting my cold, I stayed in on NYE and offered to babysit my little cousins.  We had a fun night playing wii, eating pizza and ice cream, and watching movies.

Ok, so I woke up new years day for the highlight of my trip...ROSE BOWL day!!!  I got to the parking lot a little after 9am.  Luckily I beat most of the traffic getting in AND I got a spot in Lot 2, which is where my friend Suzanne had set up a tailgate.  I got to see lots of old Gamma Phi friends at her tailgate, which was awesome.

After spending some time there, I was on a mission to find some other friends and get my ticket.  A small group of us went to find an old PIKE friend Chris Abernathy.  It was a success and great to visit with him.

Along the way, we found more friends...Bink, Neil, Nina, and E.  They joined us to find the RV tailgate.  When we got to the RV, we met up with Ben and Luke, hung out for a bit and got our tickets :)  We found out some great news that there would be a group of us all sitting together.  I thought it would be just me and G since the tickets were sold in pairs.  Luke was able to get a block of tickets though!

We went into the game a little before it started after getting herded like cattle over to our gate.  We had a nice view from our seats and were excited to watch the Ducks take on Ohio State.  Unfortunately the game did not end in our favor, but it was still a great experience!

I came home Saturday night, so I would have a day to get some things done before heading back to work.  Now I am just day dreaming about where to go next...

Rose Bowl Bound

The Ducks are in the Rose Bowl and I refused to miss the big game! Although, this mini road trip may not be nearly as cool as, lets say Spain, I felt the need to contribute something new to my blog. Its been way too long...

I woke up bright and early the day tickets went on sale...and that was a huge waste of time. I don't think I know a single person who got tickets through Ticketmaster. Luckily someone was able to get me tickets though! (Luke is my new hero)!!

I hit the open road tomorrow to head to Pasadena, via Sylmar, CA where my cousin Dan and his family live. Should be an exhilarating drive, by myself, down I-5. I have a million things to do tonight, and I want to do is sleep so I can kick this cold, which will seriously put a damper on my fun if it doesn't go away. Oil Change, Cleaning out the Car, Laundry, Packing, and iPod Updating are all on the list of things that must get done.

Can't wait to see so many college friends! Hopefully I will be able to meet up with most of them! Might be tough, but it needs to happen :)
GO DUCKS!!!
